- Rock Hill is the fifth-largest city in the state. Located approximately 25 miles south of Charlotte and approximately 70 miles north of Columbia, it offers scenic riverfront views along the Catawba River and is home to numerous nature trails, restaurants, and thirty-one parks which are used for both national and local events. Of the three colleges in Rock Hill, the most prominent institution is Winthrop University, founded in 1886. The other two include Clinton Junior College, a historically black two-year institution founded by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in 1894 now a community college and York Technical College.
