About the Upstate Region of South Carolina

  • Greenville, the largest city in this area, is home to several colleges and universities.  Furman University, which began in 1825, is the oldest followed by many others including Greenville Technical College and campuses of Clemson and the University of South Carolina.  Companies, including Michelin, AVX Corporation, Ameco, Certus Bank, as well as facilities operated by 3m, Honeywell and General Electric.
  • Anderson, the smallest of the Upstate cities, earned the name an “all American City” in 2000.  It is the home of Anderson University and over 230 manufactures, including 22 international companies. 
  • Spartanburg, located 98 miles northwest of Columbia, 80 miles west of Charlotte, NC, and 190 miles northeast of Atlanta, GA., is home to the world headquarters and research facility for Milliken & Company and its revitalized downtown district includes the world headquarters of Denny’s restaurants.  Wofford College, founded in 1854, and Converse College, founded in 1889, are but two of the many institutions of higher learning located in Spartanburg.
