Decree Relegating
Chapel at Carter-May Home/St. Joseph Residence,
1660 Ingram Road, Charleston, South Carolina,
to Profane but not Sordid Use
Having closed the Carter-May Home/St. Joseph Residence owned by the Diocese of Charleston and located at 1660 Ingram Road, Charleston, South Carolina, in May 2024; and
Whereas the Diocese of Charleston intends to sell this facility, parcel, and associated buildings; and
Having removed the altar and all sacred objects previously located within the chapel located at the Carter-May Home/St. Joseph Residence and brought them into ecclesiastical custody; and
Having ensured the residents as well as the employees of the facility have been relocated, and, therefore, the good of souls suffers no detriment; and
Having determined that no person can claim legitimate rights to said chapel; and
Having sought and heard the counsel of the Presbyteral Council of the Diocese of Charleston on November 6, 2024; and in accordance with the norms of canon 1222 §2 and by testimony of this document;
I HEREBY DECREE the chapel located at the former Carter-May Home/St. Joseph Residence, 1660 Ingram Road, Charleston, South Carolina, be relegated to profane but not sordid use and shall no longer be used for divine worship. I further allow for the potential sale of the chapel edifice and parcel with its associated buildings, provided they are not given over to any use unworthy of its dignity as a former sacred place.
I direct that this decree be published on the website for the Diocese of Charleston, charlestondiocese.org, which will be presumed the official notification of this action. A petition for revocation or emendation of this decree is subject to canons 1732 – 1739.
The relegation of the chapel at 1660 Ingram Road, Charleston, to profane but not sordid use is to become effective Monday, February 3, 2025, nothing the contrary withstanding.
