Most Rev. Jacques Fabre-Jeune, CS, was appointed by Pope Francis as Bishop of Charleston. He is a vowed cleric of the religious order the Missionaries of St. Charles, or Scalabrinian Fathers, and became the 14th Ordinary for the diocese.
Bishop Jacques Fabre-Jeune was born Nov. 13, 1955, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, one of the six children of Providence and Anita Fabre.
After emigrating from Haiti, Bishop Fabre pursued his education in the United States, with two year of high school education in New York, a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at the College of Staten Island, a Bachelor of Arts from St. John’s University, and a Masters of Divinity in St. Michael’s College in Toronto, Canada. He went on to earn a Master of Divinity and a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology and Human Mobility (Migration) from the Pontifical Urban University (Urbiana) in Rome, Italy. He professed first vows in 1982, perpetual vows in 1985, and was ordained to the priesthood in Brooklyn, New York, in 1986.
He served parishes in Florida, and as chaplain to Haitian refugees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before spending 13 years as administrator of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre in the Dominican Republic (1991–2004). Following further studies in Rome, he returned to parish ministry in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia, at Holy Trinity Church in Peachtree City, St. Joseph in Athens and Mission San Felipe de Jesús in Forest Park.
