BISHOP OF CHARLESTON
Whereas the Daughters of Saint Paul have closed their religious house, chapel, and bookstore located at 243 King Street in Charleston, South Carolina, and
Whereas the Daughters of Saint Paul, who own the building in question, intend to sell this facility, and
Whereas no religious purpose can be found for the future use of this property, and
Whereas the Presbyteral Council of the Diocese of Charleston was consulted on 23 January 2024 and unanimously endorsed the reduction of that chapel to profane but not sordid use, so now
I decree in accordance with canon 1222 that the chapel contained within the building at 243 King Street in Charleston, South Carolina is reduced to profane but not sordid use and is no longer to be used for divine worship.
I further direct the pastor of Saint Mary of the Annunciation Church on Hasell Street, the territorial parish in which the former chapel is located, to arrange the removal and appropriate storage or use of all the sacred furnishings of the former chapel.
Given at the Chancery of the Diocese of Charleston on 25 January 2024, the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul.
