CHARLESTON—As the clock ticks steadily towards July, the Diocese of Charleston is preparing to commemorate the past and embrace the future with the 200th anniversary of its founding.

Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone will commence the yearlong celebration with a Solemn Vespers service on July 11 at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 120 Broad St. It is open to all.

The Diocese of Charleston was canonically erected July 11, 1820, by Pope Pius VII.

In order to make this a statewide celebration, the seven deaneries will organize local events and projects over the upcoming year marking the occasion and celebrating their culture.
