POSITION SUMMARY: RELIGION, MATH OR SCIENCE

The Diocese of Charleston seeks quality applicants committed to sharing their gifts and
expertise with middle school students through the art of good teaching. Centered on Jesus
Christ, Catholic schools of the Diocese of Charleston partner with parents in the Catholic
education of their children and hand on the best of what the Church has received. Through
an integrated Catholic curriculum, a Catholic school teacher helps young women and men
engage the spiritual, moral, civic, and professional challenges in the world, and, aided by
God’s grace, place their achievement at the service of God and neighbor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Catholic Culture & Mission
• Joyfully witnesses to the Catholic faith and fosters a Catholic worldview in the
classroom
• Cultivates a classroom rooted in virtue, prayer and the Sacraments, and an
abiding care for others
• Connects the Faith to all disciplines, daily life, and lives of the Saints
• Encourages the practice of spiritual and corporeal works of mercy and the service
of those in great need

Academic Achievement and Integration
• Understands and helps students master a rigorous academic curriculum
• Demonstrates love for the related subject matter, keen instructional skills, and
resource materials for course(s) taught with a heavy reliance on primary texts
• Crafts lessons and experiences that grow a sense of wonder, intellectual curiosity,
and apply the gift of reason
• Evaluates, monitors, and encourages high student achievement and mastery

Classroom
• Maintains strong, collegial partnerships with parents as primary educators in the
ways of the Faith and with others engaged in the work of a Catholic school
• Cultivates a nurturing, organized, and well-managed classroom where each
student feels Christ’s love and is recognized as a unique and unrepeatable gift
• Fosters through Socratic seminars and other instructional practices a space of
respect, inquiry, and dialogue rooted in the Truth
• Nurtures a positive and collaborative classroom ethos through the promotion of
the virtues and importance of strong character development

Team
• Works as a committed and integrated member of the school’s faculty
• Collaborates beyond the classroom in support of goals of the Diocese and school
• Communicates proactively and regularly with parents, teachers, and staff about
student progress and achievement
• Participates in ongoing formation and development opportunities offered by the
Diocese and school

• Experience with middle school students in a Catholic school
• Bachelor’s degree required; Graduate degree admired
• Openness to ongoing certification and formation, as requested
