The Office of Divine Worship & the Sacraments of the Diocese of Charleston exists to assist the bishop in promoting the Liturgical life of his diocese. Offices such as these were first suggested by the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum concilium (“this most Sacred Council”). Paragraphs 41-45 state that the local bishop is to be considered the high priest of his flock, manifesting the presence of the Apostles commissioned by Christ to preach the Gospel in His Name. As such, it is the bishop’s responsibility to ensure that Divine Worship in the territory entrusted to him fosters full accentuation of Jesus Christ’s actions in salvation history as they are manifested in the Liturgy each time the faithful gather to praise Him.
While it is impossible for the bishop to be present in every Liturgical celebration that occurs in his diocese, this Liturgical office, to be staffed by experts in Liturgical science, assists the bishop in safeguarding proper Liturgical celebrations.
The Office of Divine Worship & the Sacraments of the Diocese of Charleston exists to provide consultation, resources, and general support to the priests, deacons, religious, and lay leaders in every part of the state of South Carolina
