POSITION SUMMARY:

The Facilities Engineer will assist the Director of Facilities in planning and overseeing the maintenance of the facilities of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. He/she will oversee, review, and implement processes and/or improvements in the operations, maintenance, and care of the Parish’s facilities. This person will ensure the efficient operation of the building and mechanical systems including the HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. He/she will assist with building an effective and cohesive facilities team that works together to achieve the Vision and Mission of the Church.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Through the employee’s own efforts, the employee accomplishes the following essential functions:

 

Regular Maintenance Responsibilities:

  • Perform ongoing preventive maintenance and repair work on facility mechanical, electrical, and other installed systems.
  • Maintains and ensures efficient operation of the HVAC systems and associated equipment, electrical equipment, plumbing systems, building management system, and building repairs.
  • Perform facility inspections and report on conditions affecting operations.
  • Assist the Director of Facilities with monitoring and supervising HVAC preventive maintenance contracts.
  • Learn and utilize HVAC control systems including the Trane Tracer© system to control conditioned spaces in the Church and PLB.
  • Respond to emergencies. May require off-hours on-site evaluation, assessments and/or repairs.
  • Coordinate each week with the Director of Facilities to schedule equipment repair and facilities maintenance with reference to Church calendared events.

Reporting:

  • Prepare and submit summary reports of conditions in buildings and recommend actions to be taken.
  • Track and report on energy & water costs (i.e., electric, gas, and water). Note any significant increases/decreases; take corrective action as needed.

Code Compliance

  • Review and understand equipment and methods of operation, fire/life safety, and other systems.
  • Comply with all safety procedures and requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with County and State ordinances and codes.

Parish/Ministry Support

  • Address facility needs of the Pastor, Clergy, Staff & ministries
  • Assist with the coordination, logistics, set-up, take-down and clean-up for major events including but not limited to the Parish Picnic, International Festival and others.
  • Assist with set up/tear down and proper storage of equipment & furniture for parish and ministry events.
  • Assist with decorating the Church and Campus for major celebrations including Christmas, Easter, Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, etc.
  • Support after hours parish/ministry facilities needs and activities as required.

Administration

  • Assist the Director of Facilities with the administration of the Parish Facilities Department including supplies inventory, attendance tracking, telephone system, etc.
  • Attend and participate in the weekly facilities scheduling meeting where set-up and transition logistics are reviewed and planned for.
  • As delegated by the Director of Facilities, direct and oversee tasks and quality of work Facilities Maintenance Assistants and outside vendors.

Team Building

  • Work with the Director to develop the facilities team into a cohesive and supportive team.

Growth Opportunity

  • As delegated by the Director of Facilities for specific projects, direct and oversee the project planning and tasks, and quality of work regarding Facilities Maintenance Assistants and outside contractors and vendors.

Other

  • Assist with the Parking Ministry for major events and celebrations at Parish.
  • Attend training sessions and seminars.
  • Safe Haven Certification is required.
  • Strict adherence to the Diocese of Charleston Code of Conduct Agreement and the Employee Conduct and Disciplinary Action guidelines stated in the Employee Handbook.

Qualifications:

  • Willing to serve and conduct oneself in a manner consistent with the values, traditions, and mission of the Catholic Church.
  • Has a strong mechanical aptitude along with excellent computer/information technology skills (e.g., MS Word, Excel, ability to learn Access control, and HVAC controls, etc.).
  • A working knowledge of fire/burglary and access control systems is desirable.
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to establish and maintain a good working relationship with vendors and contractors.
  • Understand the use and care of tools, equipment, and cleaning materials.
  • Performs work according to safety procedures and maintains neat and uncluttered workspaces.
  • Has the ability to work cooperatively with others and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to follow a set work schedule implemented by the Director of Facilities.
  • Must have the ability to work and relate to a variety of personalities and cultures with diplomacy, friendliness, and poise.

GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

General working hours:

  • Generally, Monday through Friday – 7am to 4pm or 8:00am – 5:00pm
  • At times it will be required to work outside of these stipulated hours for other work-related activities and functions.

Physical requirements:

  • Lifting: Has the ability to lift 40 lbs. and climb a ladder 6/8 feet or higher.
  • Able to stand on one’s feet for a long period of time, bending, stooping with the possibility of exposure to climate and temperature changes.
  • Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks and has an ability to navigate from one location to another.
  • Must be able to perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Assesses potential safety threats, such as exposure to heat from malfunctioning equipment.
  • Able to express and exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Ability to receive and understand detailed information through oral communication.
  • Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Able to stand on one’s feet for a long period of time, bending, and stooping with the possibility of exposure to climate and temperature changes.
  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and /or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, with walking and standing required only occasionally.
  • The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
