SUMMARY:CANCELED: Dead Sea Scroll and Holy Week lecture with Dr. John Bergsma - Day 1
DESCRIPTION:This event is canceled.  \nMonday\, March 23\, 2020 \n“Holy Thursday through Jewish Eyes: Light from the Dead Sea Scrolls” \nModern Americans think Jesus just celebrated “a farewell meal to remember him by” on his last night with his disciples\, but that’s simply not what was going on in the Upper Room. The Dead Sea Scrolls help us understand  Jesus’ words and deeds in the Upper Room like ancient Jews. It resolves apparent contradictions in the Gospels\, as well as show how thoroughly “Jewish” the Eucharist really is. You’ll understand the Eucharist better and receive it more intensely! \nDr. John Bergsma is Associate Professor of Theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville\, in Steubenville\, Ohio. He holds the M.Div. and Th.M. degrees from Calvin Seminary\, Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, and served as a Protestant pastor for four years before entering the Catholic Church in 2001 while pursuing a Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Notre Dame.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Dead Sea Scroll and Holy Week lecture with Dr. John Bergsma - Day 2
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled. \nTuesday\, March 24\, 2020 \n“Good Friday through Jewish Eyes: Light from the Dead Sea Scrolls” \nWe all get the point that Jesus “died for our sins on the cross\,” but there is so much more going on in Jesus’ Passion and Crucifixion. The Dead Sea Scrolls and other ancient Jewish records help us understand the deeper meaning of the Gospel accounts of Jesus death. You’ll never read or watch the Passion story quite the same again!

SUMMARY:Holy Day of Obligation: Ascension of Jesus
DESCRIPTION:Today we celebrate Jesus’ ascension into Heaven: usccb.org/bible/readings/052420-ascension.cfm \nWhen they had gathered together they asked him\, “Lord\, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” \nHe answered them\, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you\, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem\, throughout Judea and Samaria\, and to the ends of the earth.” \nWhen he had said this\, as they were looking on\, he was lifted up\, and a cloud took him from their sight. While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going\, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said\, “Men of Galilee\, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.” \nThen they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet\, which is near Jerusalem\, a sabbath day’s journey away. Acts 1:6-12

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Alpha Opening Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID-19\, this event has been canceled. \n*** \nWhat is Alpha? Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith\, typically run over eleven weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe\, and everyone is welcome. \nWhat to expect? A typical Alpha runs in cafés\, churches\, universities\, homes —you name it. No two Alphas look the same\, but they generally have three key things in common: food\, a talk and good conversation. \nFirst up there’s… Food Whether it’s a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table\, or a quick catch-up over coffee and cake\, food has a way of bringing people together. It’s no different at Alpha. We start with food\, because it’s a great way to encourage community and get to know each other. \nThen a… Talk The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Generally thirty minutes long\, they can be given as a live talk or played as a video. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity\, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith? \nFollowed by… Discussion Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic\, and simply discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything. And there’s nothing you can’t say. It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest\, friendly and open environment.
