DESCRIPTION:“A Timeline of Love and Unity in Diversity; Celebrating the Diocese of Charleston Bicentennial”\nPrayer\, Dialogue and Celebrating the History of Black Catholics in the Diocese of Charleston.  \nAbout this Event \nAll are invited to celebrate and dialogue on the History of Black Catholics in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston. This event is a part of our 200th Bicentennial of the Diocese of Charleston. This two day event consists of activities that center on the rich history of Evangelization of Black Catholics in South Carolina. The history of Catholic Schools and Parishes in and for the Black community throughout the years. You will hear stories of Black Catholics attending prestigious boarding schools in the North and South\, segregation and desegregation and the role the diocese played during the Civil Rights Movement. \nSt. Martin de Porres will serve as your host for this historical occasion. Franciscan Friar\, Paul Williams\, will be returning to South Carolina to serve as our Homilist and keynote speaker. The Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone\, Bishop of Charleston\, will celebrate the Mass and share a few words with us following the Mass; a youth track will be facilitated by Dr. Alison Mc Letchie and Sr. Roberta Fulton\, SSMN; and a panel of notable Black Catholic History Makers will present including Kathleen Merritt and Fr. Michael Okere. \nAll of our Historically African American Parishes and Schools are encouraged to select a representative to give a 3 minute talk or show a 3 minute video on your history and bring some pictures to share. More information will be sent to parish priests in regard to this request. \nYou are welcome to bring your Mardi Gras masks for Friday Night and encouraged to wear your African Attire on Saturday for this Special Bicentennial celebration! \nSchedule of Events \nFriday\, February 21\, 2020 – Dialogue and Mardi Gras Affair 6:30 pm – 11:00 pm.  A panel led discussion on Catholic Schools in and for the Black Community followed by a Mardi Gras Party with New Orleans style Mardi Gras\, Food and Dancing. SUMMARY:Bicentennial Pilgrimage Tour to Ireland
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the Irish heritage of Bishop John England\, first bishop of the Diocese of Charleston. \nLearn about Bishop England’s Irish origins\, as well as his support of Catholic liberation during the country’s struggles under British rule. \nKey to the bicentennial pilgrimage is a plan to install a memorial plaque dedicated to Bishop England in the Cathedral at Cork. \nPilgrimage includes: \n\nA visit to Bandon — where Bishop England received his call to move to Charleston.\nStops in Bishop John England’s native Cork\, including the Cork Gaol (similar to the prison where he worked as a chaplain)\, and the churches where he was ordained and then consecrated as Bishop of Charleston.\nStops at sites in Kerry related to the historic Irish political figure\, Daniel O’Connell\, who successfully worked for the liberation of Ireland’s Catholics in 1829. Bishop England was a strong supporter of O’Connell and his work.\nA visit to Carlow College\, where the bishop studied as a seminarian.\nTours of historic sites in Dublin and Belfast.\n\nThe pilgrimage is being led by Cormac O’Duffy of Summerville\, a native of Ireland who has studied Bishop England’s life and ministry extensively. \nSpace is available for up to 100 pilgrims. SUMMARY:An International History of Catholicism in the American South: Commemorating the Bicentennial of the Diocese of Charleston.
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston will celebrate the bicentennial of its founding. To underscore the importance of this milestone\, the diocese will conduct a one-day academic conference\, “An International History of Catholicism in the American South: Commemorating the Bicentennial of the Diocese of Charleston.” This conference will explore aspects of Catholicism in the three-state territory of the original Charleston diocese\, the Carolinas and Georgia. It will be hosted on May 15th\, 2020\, at the College of Charleston as part of a multi-day “Port Cities in the Atlantic” conference sponsored by the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program (CLAW) https://claw.cofc.edu/. \nScholars are invited to submit proposals for individual papers\, or thematic panels of three papers\, to be delivered at the International History of Catholicism portion of the CLAW conference. Papers will be considered on any topic\, but the following themes are especially relevant: \n\nHistorical aspects of Catholicism in the coastal South and the Atlantic world;\nCatholicism’s reaction to slavery\, abolitionism\, emancipation and the struggle for civil rights;\nThe Diocese of Charleston and the two Vatican Councils;\nEcumenism in Georgia and the Carolinas.\n\n Additional events and commemorations associated with the bicentennial of the Diocese of Charleston will be conducted during and after the academic conference. Those wishing to attend only the one-day conference sponsored by the Diocese of Charleston may register for the CLAW Conference at the discounted rate of $20.00. Details about lodging\, registration\, and other logistical matters will be forthcoming shortly. \nProposals should be submitted to CLAW\, with a cover letter clearly indicating the proposal is for the International History of Catholicism portion of the overall conference.
